They need to modify and reshape their work, and blocking the yarn plays a crucial role in this.
There are also other special situations where blocking acrylic yarn is necessary, such as when newly purchased rolls of acrylic yarn are deformed due to shipping, or when designers need to weave specific shapes, such as curled lace or petals. Blocking helps to shape the yarn.

Material Analysis of Acrylic Yarn Blocking

The material of acrylic yarn is a synthetic fiber, primarily composed of polyacrylonitrile. Its material characteristics include:

1. High thermoplasticity: It softens and deforms at certain temperatures, and can solidify into a new shape after cooling.
2. Poor moisture absorption: Low moisture regain (only 1-2%), prone to wrinkles and deformation after washing.
3. Static electricity: Humidification reduces static electricity.

Methods for Blocking Acrylic Yarn

Tools You'll Need First

Shaping board and measuring tape
Recommended auxiliary tools: Pins, rubber bands, mainly used to fix the work.

1.Most Recommended: Warm Water Blocking.

1. Pour warm water (40-60 degrees Celsius) into a container (above 80 degrees Celsius may melt the acrylic yarn; in my experience, the water should feel warm to the touch), then add a small amount of wool detergent or soap.
2. Soak for 5-10 minutes to soften the fibers, then gently squeeze out the water and stretch as needed.
3. Finally, place the piece on a flat surface (a shaping board is recommended) and let it air dry in a well-ventilated area. You can use a low-temperature hair dryer.

2.Steam Blocking

If using a steamer, wrap the piece in a towel, place it on a steaming rack, and steam over medium-low heat with the lid on for 3-5 minutes.
If using an iron, set it to the steam setting and spray the work directly with a sandblasting spray.

3.DIY Yarn Toy: Spray Bottle Blocking

Steps: 1. Lay the work flat on a table or shaping board, then secure it with clips or nails to prevent deformation.
2. You can add some water and a small amount of white vinegar to the spray bottle. The white vinegar helps soften the work; just make it slightly damp.

Drying Steps

Finally, place the work on a flat surface (a shaping board is recommended) and let it air dry naturally in a well-ventilated area. You can use a low-temperature hairdryer to dry it. Prolonged dampness can cause the work to mold, so avoid drying it in a humid place.

Mistakes to Avoid

1. If the yarn becomes stiff and rough to the touch after blocking, it may be due to excessive heat.
2. If the work fades, it may be due to poor colorfastness of the yarn itself, or it may be due to the use of soap containing bleach.
3. Avoid exposing the blocked work to direct sunlight, as this will cause fading.
4. Note: Repeated blocking will reduce the texture and elasticity of the work.
